Configure both the controller 1& 2 using the same plugin. You can select one controller as gamepad other as keyboard. If you have a PS3 gamepad, you can also use it to play ps2 games using PS3 Gamepad wireless feature on pc. This is a room filled with burned-out, cynical, frustrated people, and that is not her. She is not a cynical person. She is a joyous person. She is a positive person. What do you think it is that she finds so rewarding about an incredibly hard job?DEARDEN: I think that it’s incredibly hard and that Mel can do it. And you mentioned it as well. You know, Mel is often, at times, a little awkward in a very charming way and likable way. And it seems like sarcasm is a tricky dynamic for her to pick up, among other things. And she’s been talked about in reviews and online chatter as being described as having autistic-coded behaviors, which – my understanding is she’s not. But I’ve heard you say in interviews that she has ADHD. What should we know, and what do you think about?DEARDEN: I don’t know what Mel’s diagnosis is. I have ADHD.DETROW: Yeah.DEARDEN: So I think I’ve just been letting – some of the things that I am better at masking, I’m just letting the mask come down a little bit more. I have a few friends whose siblings are more need (ph) autism. And because of that, they never noticed that their younger child – my friends – are also autistic. And so I think, you know, trying to show that it really is a spectrum and also that, you know, ADHD has finally been put on the same spectrum as autism.DETROW: I think a lot of people have somebody in their family or somebody in their life who does have ADHD and see all the different ways it can play out. It was interesting – you said that there’s behavior that you sometimes mask that you don’t mask in the scenes. Can you give us one example, maybe, from one scene where you kind of consciously thought about that or just played out that way on camera?DEARDEN: I think a lot of my anxiety, I’m able to mask better. And I just kind of liked the idea that Mel can’t mask much of anything, especially because of how sweet she is. It’s just, you know, you get all Mel, all the time.(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, “THE PITT”)WYLE: (As Dr. Michael Robinavitch) You OK?DEARDEN: (As Melissa ‘Mel’ King) I am – I get frustrated when I can’t do things or at least it looks like it.WYLE: (As Dr. Michael Robinavitch) Yeah, you and me both.DEARDEN: (As Melissa ‘Mel’ King) Thanks, but my frustration manifests itself emotionally, and then I get upset. There’s a scene where Mel is looking at a lava lamp app or listening to the ocean sound, and it’s all of the self-soothing and stimming that is – which I’m really glad they show that part ’cause they don’t usually show that.DETROW: Is there anything that you personally, in real life, learned from this experience, whether it was that medical boot camp at the front end or way the show was approached or filmed?DEARDEN: This is a – it’s a very tough show for neurodivergents to be in.DETROW: Yeah.DEARDEN: It moves really fast. It’s really hard words. It’s actions we just learned. You have to put all of that together at the same time and as quickly as possible. And we go so quickly, we don’t have much time to take a second to review, to calm down. And so it’s definitely a challenge to shoot.DETROW: Can I ask – you’re talking about the importance of showing that recovery time for Mel, the character. Is that something you were trying to make sure to get for yourself as an actor on set in this environment that seemed just as overwhelming as it really are?DEARDEN: Yeah. And it’s tough to find the time. It’s also very tough to explain to people what’s going on inside. If it’s not – you can’t see that I’m panic-stricken. It’s kind of hard to understand that I am. I eventually had to get some earplugs that just soften external noise so that you could at least try and hear better just what’s in front of you. And I started wearing those, which I definitely pitched, like, I think Mel should wear these, which is just so that I can wear them.DETROW: (Laughter) Yeah.DEARDEN: There’s a lot of things that have to happen for it to be – I don’t know – comfortable to explore.DETROW: We were talking about your experience on the set portraying a neurodivergent character as somebody who’s neurodivergent yourself, and you’re talking about kind of the challenges that creates. But it seems like you’ve also made a decision to be OK and open talking about it to the press, talking about it in public in a way that I think a lot of people would shy away from doing. Was that an active decision on your end? Why do you think that’s important to be honest about?DEARDEN: It was. When I talked to Scott and John early on in the med boot camp that we had, I told them that I relate to this character because I see a lot of the neurodivergent parts of Mel as something I experience all the time. And John said something that was just, like, I didn’t even think about it, and he was just so wonderful. He said, do you want to come out of the neurotypical, neurodivergence closet, so to speak, for the show? Are you willing to do that? And I had never thought of, oh, yeah, that is something you have to think of.And I took it home. I thought it over. And I realized it’s, like, you know, I can mask only so much, and I’m really ready for people to know. I tell everyone I meet because there are certain social behaviors that might seem odd. And so I usually have to tell everyone I meet, like, in case I do this, just so you know, it’s not on purpose. So it was great for them to let it be my decision completely. I was testing out a new 4G LTE modem, a Sierra Wireless AirPrime EM7565, which is rated at Cat 12 and theoretically gets hundreds of megabits down. A huge improvement over my previous modem of choice, the Quectel EC25-A. I learned how to use minicom to connect to the modem (e.g. minicom –device /dev/ttyUSB0 –baudrate 115200), and using that utility is a blast from the past! If you thought exiting vim was hard, try exiting minicom while SSH’ed into a Raspberry Pi from a Mac using Terminal! Alternatively I could have one terminal session open to cat /dev/ttyUSB0 and in another, run AT commands like echo -ne ‘AT\r\n’ > /dev/ttyUSB0. But that often led to weird characters being inserted when I did that via SSH, causing mayhem. In either case, it feels like computing in the 80s. Windows prefers these modems run in a mode called MBIM, and sometimes they don’t even appear in Linux at all. In my case, the modem’s USB Product ID was 90b1, which meant Linux’s qmi_wwan driver didn’t even pick up the modem and register it as a serial device. Good. Now the USB PID persists across reboots. But the process of getting this modem to work with Linux was just beginning. Little did I know I’d spend days trying to get this modem into a working state! But after resetting the modem, it would no longer show up with a USB TTY device! Apparently when I reset the modem, it started using that old USB PID again. So I had to go through the steps of forcing ID 9091 again. Once I did that, I compiled a custom build of OpenWRT, and configured a wwan interface in OpenWRT to connect using my SixFab SIM card. This seemed to work… except that I was only seeing TX traffic, and no RX traffic: …but it also reset the USB PID again, so I had to re-reset that so I could then update the firmware again to the latest version. I did that twice because apparently if you update from the 01.05.01.00 version to the latest version only one time, it could get the modem stuck in ‘low power mode’. Why? No clue. Does it work? Can I get a custom compiled OpenWRT build working (there’s a great OpenWRT compile guide video here, btw)? Don’t know yet. I’ll keep working on it, and hopefully will have it ready for a video on my YouTube channel soon! When I had my BBS in the 90s, I had to burn EPROMs for the firmware upgrades of the modems, and I though that that was a PITA. When EEPROMS finally came around (and later flash memory), I never thought that I’d miss burning EPROMS, but this shows that newer is not necessarily better I have been sitting on one of these modems for the better part of a year. In a USB adapter and plugged into a windows 10 box I had no issues getting it to work on my Verizon account. No such luck under pfSense, openRT, or DDWRT. Clearly I have some things to try to get it a bit closer. I have a PC Engines APU4d4 for the job so I might have issues there as well… At least I know that the modem works so I guess I got that going for me. Or should I say cheats croissant dough. I am the strange person that actually really enjoys making traditional croissant dough. All the rolling and folding is somehow quite therapeutic. But I know I am in the minority. There is also plenty of times I want a really flaky croissant-esque dough, but want to make it quicker and with a significantly lower difficulty level. I have been using a version of this recipe for years, the first version appeared in my book Patisserie Made Simple (that version utilised a food processor), and even before that, I was using that same method to make flaky cinnamon buns for my old bakery business down on Maltby St Market. Over the years, I adapted the method, trying to improve on it, trying to make it more foolproof. The recipe below is the current version, a recipe that creates wonderfully flaky pastry in the style of croissant dough. For the dough, add the two flours, sugar, salt and yeast and mix to combine. If kneading by hand add the butter and rub into the flour until the butter disappears into the flour. If kneading in a stand mixer simply add the butter to the bowl. Pour 265ml lukewarm water into the bowl and knead to form a smooth and elastic ball of dough. By hand, this will take around 15 minutes, and in the mixer, it will take around 10 minutes. Shape the dough into a ball and place back into the bowl, then cover and set aside until doubled in size; this will take about 45-60 minutes. Tip out the dough and press it into a rough square shape, roughly 20/22cm wide, wrap in clingfilm and then freeze for 40 minutes. The aim is not to freeze the dough so that it is hard but to make it easier to handle and to stop it from proofing. Instead of traditional laminating we are going to keep things really simple and just roll the whole thing up, like a big Swiss roll. Start the roll from the end of the dough which has no butter. Once the dough is all rolled up use a rolling pin to flatten the dough slightly. Wrap the dough up in clingfilm and refrigerate it for 20-30 minutes. Once chilled, roll out the dough as before into a 25x45cm rectangle, and then roll it up one final time. The finished dough can then be refrigerated overnight until you are ready to use it. You can use the dough after a 60-minute rest in the fridge, but I like to leave it overnight as it will be easier to roll out after an extended rest. Once the dough is made you can also freeze it for up to a month. In the fridge it will keep for 2 days. To make the pastry cream add the milk, half of the sugar, vanilla and cardamom to a saucepan and place over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Meanwhile, whisk together the remaining sugar, cornflour and egg yolks, whisking until the mixture is smooth. When the milk mixture has come to a simmer, slowly pour the milk over the yolk mixture, whisking as you pour to prevent the yolks from scrambling. Pour the custard back into the pan and place back over medium heat. Whisk constantly until the custard has thickened and is bubbling. Cook for a further minute to ensure the starch is fully cooked out. Scrape the pastry cream into a bowl and mix through the butter, stirring until the custard is smooth and lump free. Press a sheet of clingfilm onto the surface of the custard, to prevent a skin from forming, and refrigerate until fully cooled. The pastry cream can be made a couple of days ahead of time. For the ganache, add the chocolate to a small bowl and set aside. Add the cream to a small saucepan and place over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Pour the cream over the chocolate and set aside for a couple of minutes before stirring to form and smooth and silky ganache. Set aside until needed. To make the cruffins, cut the croissant dough in half and work with one piece of dough at a time. Roll out the dough into a 28x32cm rectangle on a lightly floured work surface. Use a sharp knife to trim the edges, to neaten up the shape, and then cut the pastry into two rectangles that will be roughly 16x28cm. Cut each rectangle into 6 smaller strips (these will be 16×4.5cm). Place these strips on a parchment-lined baking tray and refrigerate whilst you repeat this process with the second piece of dough. You should end up with a total of 24 strips. Lightly grease a 12-hole muffin tray, and set aside. Remove the pastry strips from the fridge. To assemble the cruffins, we need to roll up two strips to form each individual cruffin. To do this, place one strip atop a second, offsetting the top piece by 3cm, and roll them up together. Visualising this can be tricky (about as tricky as it is to describe it), so the image above and the video below should help significantly. Once rolled up, you need to gently stretch the two ends and tuck them underneath the cruffin. The reason for this style of shaping, instead of just rolling up one long strip, is that it helps to create that classic look you get with cruffins. The final part of the shaping is to lightly flour the handle of a wooden spoon and press this down into the middle of the cruffin. This helps ensure a nice domed finish to the baked cruffins, and stops the centre of the spiral poking up as the cruffins proof and then bake. Place the shaped cruffins into the prepared muffin pan and lightly cover with clingfilm. Set aside to proof for about 1-2 hours or until the cruffins have doubled in size and you can see some separation in the layers. Whilst the cruffins are proofing preheat the oven to 210C (190C Fan). Bake the cruffins for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Whilst baking, prepare the orange sugar. Zest an orange into the sugar and use your hands to rub the zest into the sugar until it is fragrant and looks a little like wet sand. Once the cruffins are baked, allow them to cool for a minute before carefully lifting them from the pan and rolling in the orange sugar. Doing this while the cruffins are hot enables the sugar to stick to the pastry. Once coated in sugar, set on a wire rack to cool completely. To add the fillings scrape the ganache into a piping bag, ideally fitted with a Bismarck tip. This style of piping tip was designed for doughnuts and has a long thin tube which is perfect for filling the middle of doughnuts without adding a large hole. Push the piping tip into the middle of the cruffins and pipe a small amount of ganache into each one. Remove the pastry cream from the fridge and beat to loosen. Add the cream to a piping bag, once again fitted with a Bismarck tip, and fill the cruffins with pastry cream. You want to add as much of the pastry cream as you can, so, like filling a doughnut, fill until the cream starts to pop out of the top of the cruffin. With the kitchen a little more tolerable I took the opportunity to whip up a batch of my \u2018Cheats Croissant Dough\u2019 and use it to make some cruffins; if I had attempted this last week, it would have been a recipe for disaster. The pastry was covered with an \u2018nduja fennel seed compound butter and layered with gruyere and prosciutto before being rolled up and then cut into individual pieces. I need a huawei modem unlocker for Ubuntu 14. My modem is a permanently locked one(Customized Firmware). So I usually temporary unlock it in windows 7, and then reboot and boot to Ubuntu for it to work. However I share my pc with other users and they cannot understand or perform the method of booting to windows for unlocking followed by rebooting to Ubuntu, every time they need to use internet. I have tried using the “mcphail/linux_huawei_unlocker” but is doesn’t work with modern modems such as my e173 u-i as the developer himself “Neil McPhail” told me. I have tried using the following command prompt methods: -3g-modems-and-using-them-on-other-networks/, -tweaks-to-unlock-huawei-modem.html, -3g-usb-dongles-in-linux/ but they all cannot unlock my device. As regards to using mobile partner to manually insert the unlock code when prompted, my modem has a customized firmware therefore the usual mobile partner unlock code prompt was removed and replaced with “only specified sim can be used on this modem”. I have tried flashing it with firmwares but since it has a cutomized firmware from my simcard provider’s company, It cannot be flashed with normal huawei firmware upgrades/downgrades. Linux Modem Manager does not prompt for unlock code as well. Please if enyone knows of a temporary modem unlocker that works in linux, please help. Also please inform honestly if I’m out of luck. Several devices (among them HUAWEI ones) can operate in two modes: when inserted they behave like a CD-Rom to provide software for installation (usually for Windows only), and when that software is installed, the devices is switching itself to work as GSM modem. The usb_modeswitch package should support that functionality on Ubuntu. It’s not easy to find cheap modems that have 3g and yet they suport all simcard due to the lack of such devices being sold in my area. Thank you all for your help. �3G Mobile Broadband: Huawei modems unleashedHaving spent a weekend firmware-updating, speeding up, network-unlocking, and making interoperable betweencomputers (and a Netgear 3G Mobile Boardband router) a pair of Huawei modems, I thought it’d be useful for myreference -and maybe for yours- if I were to write up a few notes. This page is not about running dubious ‘unlock’applications, but lower level manual hacks/tweaking. Until now, I have had a venerable Huawei E220 modem (on Vodafone, in the UK) as my primary broadband connection, andprincipally used on my old Windows XP desktop computer. I have a Huawei E1752 modem (on Orange, in the UK) whichI consider my ‘backup’ internet connection, and working on my newer Windows 7 laptop. Previous experience hadshown that the Vodafone Mobile Connect and Orange software and modems were not going to coexist on one computer easily(more on that later). The Vodafone connection routinely got about 1.5Mbps download and about 300kbps upload, although if the E220 was strungup in the right place to get the best signal and conditions were favourable, I got download speeds of around 2Mbps,peaking at 3.6Mbps. The Orange connection gets 1Mbps download on a good day, only 300kps on a not-good day. Uplink never exceeds 300kbps.I think the network (base-station) infrastructure isn’t very up-to-date in my location. I had become aware that a newer, faster firmware (11.117.09.04.00) was available for the E220, supporting HSDPA to 7.2Mbps.Not wanting to get firmwares from dubious sites, I downloaded the firmware update from the German Vodafone site (not surewhy, but the German Vodafone website seems to be a repository for firmware updates, even the UK technical-support sendcustomers that way). Knowing that the E1752 (network-locked to Orange) supports HSUPA, I hoped to get my Vodafone SIM working in the E1752. (Tobe honest, Vodafone would probably have given me a newer dongle by now had I asked… but I never wanted to get committed toanother 12-18 month contract.) Again not liking dubious unlock applications (which might come with all kinds of malware, and/or just ‘brick’ the dongle),I looked for other approaches. It seems that the 8-digit ‘unlock’ code for Huawei modems can bemathematically/algorithmically derived from the IMEI number. While you can download questionable apps to do this, there’salso a few websites which will calculate the code for free and with no-nonsense on a web-page. You also need to find the COM port of the modem. Use Windows’ Device Manager (from System Properties, select the Hardwaretab, then press the Device Manager button). Expand the Modems and the Ports (COM & LPT) branches of the tree. Normallytwo COM ports will be associated with the device – one is the command/control interface and the other is the data traffic.Attempt to connect to each of the relevant COM ports using the terminal emulator program – you may need to stop/close yournormal mobile-broadband connection manager (Vodafone Mobile Connect etc) at this point, as otherwise it might tie up therelevant ports. You will probably need to turn on ‘local echo’ in your terminal emulator, otherwise you won’t see whatyou’re typing. Note that the baud-rate setting seems to be irrelevant here – leave it at 9600. When you think you’ve got a connection, try entering AT+GMI and press [enter]. It should reply “huawei”.Other harmless commnds to try include:AT+GMM (returns model)AT+GMR (returns firmware)AT+CSQ (returns some numbers relating to the signal strength)AT+COPS? The modem ‘virtual CD’ would kick in and begin to start the software installer(which I cancelled), but the modem part of the device wasn’t being recognised… Huawei dongles appear as multiple devices within one physical USB device: they contain the ‘modem’ part, a ‘virtual CD’which (you can see in Windows Explorer) contains the driver/’lite’ version of the connection manager software, andsome like the E1752 also have a memory-card. It appears that with some systems (motherboards?) and/or if drivers for different Huawei devices already exist on asystem that not all parts of the device are registered properly by the OS. One fix is to disable everything except themodem part. (Obviously this means that you won’t have access to the on-board software until/unless you re-enable it. If younormally use a ‘full’ version of the connection manager on your system then this won’t be a problem.) You have to do this by entering an AT command using the terminal emulator as above… on a system which doesrecognise the device.AT^U2DIAG=0 (makes the device modem-only in future)AT^U2DIAG=255 (makes the device fully-featured in future)(other variations on the parameters will enable different permutations of the device components). ArchLinux (ref below) reckons:AT^U2DIAG=0 – the device is only Modem AT^U2DIAG=1 – device is in modem mode + CD ROM AT^U2DIAG=255 – the device in modem mode + CD ROM + Card Reader AT^U2DIAG=256 – the device in modem mode + Card Reader On further investigation, the systems (both Win XP and Win 7) seem to be a bit flaky about recognising all the modem capabilities (in particular the ‘modem’ and COM-port interface part as opposed to the CD-ROM part) depending on which USB socket it’s plugged into and maybe relative to which USB sockets have previously had drivers installed. The use of “serving” also dates to early documents, such as RFC 4,[6] contrasting “serving-host” with “using-host”. Through metonymy, it refers to a device used for (or a device dedicated to) running one or several server programs. On a network, such a device is called a host. We are working closely with industry partners including chip makers, hardware OEMs, and application vendors to protect customers. To get all available protections, firmware (microcode) and software updates are required. This includes microcode from device OEMs and, in some cases, updates to antivirus software. On May 14, 2019, Intel published information about a new subclass of speculative execution side-channel vulnerabilities known as Microarchitectural Data Sampling and documented in ADV190013 | Microarchitectural Data Sampling. They have been assigned the following CVEs: Microsoft has released updates to help mitigate these vulnerabilities. To get all available protections, firmware (microcode) and software updates are required. This may include microcode from device OEMs. In some cases, installing these updates will have a performance impact. We have also acted to secure our cloud services. We strongly recommend deploying these updates. On August 6, 2019 Intel released details about a Windows kernel information disclosure vulnerability. This vulnerability is a variant of the Spectre, Variant 1 speculative execution side-channel vulnerability and has been assigned CVE-2019-1125. On July 9, 2019 we released security updates for the Windows operating system to help mitigate this issue. Please note that we held back documenting this mitigation publicly until the coordinated industry disclosure on Tuesday, August 6, 2019. On November 12, 2019, Intel published a technical advisory around Intel Transactional Synchronization Extensions (Intel TSX) Transaction Asynchronous Abort vulnerability that is assigned CVE-2019-11135. Microsoft has released updates to help mitigate this vulnerability and the OS protections are enabled by default for Windows Server 2019 but disabled by default for Windows Server 2016 and earlier Windows Server OS editions. Evaluate the risk to your environment based on the information that is provided on Microsoft Security Advisories: ADV180002, ADV180012, ADV190013, and ADV220002, in addition to the information provided in this knowledge base article. On July 12, 2022, we published CVE-2022-23825 | AMD CPU Branch Type Confusion which describes that aliases in the branch predictor may cause certain AMD processors to predict the wrong branch type. This issue might potentially lead to information disclosure. To help protect against this vulnerability, we recommend installing Windows updates that are dated on or after July 2022 and then take action as required by CVE-2022-23825 and registry key information that is provided in this knowledge base article. On August 8, 2023, we published CVE-2023-20569 | Return Address Predictor (also known as Inception) which describes a new speculative side channel attack that can result in speculative execution at an attacker-controlled address. This issue affects certain AMD processors and might potentially lead to information disclosure. To help protect against this vulnerability, we recommend installing Windows updates that are dated on or after August 2023 and then take action as required by CVE-2023-20569 and registry key information that is provided in this knowledge base article. On April 9, 2024 we published CVE-2022-0001 | Intel Branch History Injection which describes Branch History Injection (BHI) which is a specific form of intra-mode BTI. This vulnerability occurs when an attacker may manipulate branch history before transitioning from user to supervisor mode (or from VMX non-root/guest to root mode). This manipulation could cause an indirect branch predictor to select a specific predictor entry for an indirect branch, and a disclosure gadget at the predicted target will transiently execute. This may be possible because the relevant branch history may contain branches taken in previous security contexts, and in particular, other predictor modes.. For JetBrains, man is this a powerful IDE with unreasonable amounts of settings. My first time opening this IDE, I spent over an hour messing around with my settings, getting my code to display just right. But, what took a bit of time to get use to was having to switch between different IDEs for different use cases. If suddenly my POST request stopped working, I would have to open up PyCharm to see if the problem was on my backend or, if I suddenly thought of a better optimization for my OPTTSP traveling salesmen class project, I would have to load CLion as well. But, with Intellesense, opening the different IDEs was simply learning a couple other scrips like webstorm . and pycharm . instead of code . Secondly, the capability of the JetBrains engine was surprisingly noticeable once I had switched over. Gone were the days where linting would randomly appear and I would try spamming command+p -> reload windows hoping some of the OCD triggering red lines would go away or actually tell me something useful. Instead, simply having consistent and fast-responding linting has been a complete breath of fresh air. Finally, what really stood out to me in JetBrains was its refactoring refactoring capabilities. Just last week, I was working on finalizing the private beta platform for release. In the process, I reorganized and generated new components to make it more scalable for future development. I think in total I moved and broke apart over 200 components and not once did I run into a single compile error caused by important statements or invalid/undefined components. For contrast, just reorganizing two files in one of my projects for my data structures class broke my entire cpp code, requiring me to manually change some imports and functions. Moreover, JetBrains extensive refactoring tools like safe delete, global renames, and more has ensured that I have had more tools than I could ever use. Overall, I would say that both of these environments come close to in terms of features and functionality. Both have solid auto-linting and formatting functionality and add a variety of customizable colors and swiggles to help you debug and better visualize your code. However, with JetBrains perfectly consistent linting engine coupled with its unbreakable refactoring process, I must say that if code factoring and refactoring is important to you and your workflow, I would definitely recommend JetBrains. Now as for the actual debugging, placing breakpoints, identifying variables, adding watchers, VS Code handles beautifully in their debug console. However, it would be nice to see the variable values directly on the code overlay rather than in the side panel. In the screenshot above, all local values in the scope are viewable in the bottom window. The dropdown next to history_and_returns shows all attribute values of the dictionary and the dataframe nested in that dictionary. On the right, Pycharm is showing the same Dataframe that is already nested in a dictionary as a SciView. Achieving this level of insight into your code without setting up any print statements or stack traces is extraordinary useful. You imagine how easy it is to find flawed logic in a loop, fix indexing errors, or any other traditionally abstract reasoning when all values are projected right into your editor next to their assignments. Like many other debuggers, JetBrains also offers the ability to step through your code. This includes the classic step over which goes to the next line or step into which goes into any function you want to examine further. An extremely useful one is Run to Cursor which allows you to set what feels like another breakpoint just by placing your cursor on a line you want to examine further. The ability for the JetBrains debugger to be instantly setup and then provide such an integrated experience has completely changed how I code and accelerated my development. As debugging is one of the most common (and rage-inducing) things we do as developers on a day to day basis, I must say this is an important, if not essential feature for many developers to have. Both IDE environments provide a very solid debugging environment but, I must say that JetBrains edges out VS Code again here by just a little bit. Specifically, with JetBrains displaying variable data right next to the declared variable makes tracking the values inside variables much more manageable where there are numerous variables live. Moreover, JetBrains stronger and more stable debugger that does not require complex set-up like the settings.json (which also, at times led me to use cout or printf statements instead) in VS Code was the cherry on top. These factors just come together help save me that tiny bit of extra time in my day and makes the JetBrains more attractive to me. In terms of features for Git integration, these environments are basically identical in terms of features. I found that they provide basically the same functionalities and you could not go wrong with either one. I would say that this just come down to personal preference. For example, I found myself preferring the JetBrains method with how merge conflicts are resolved as the interfaces laid side to side instead of stacked on top of each other. Not really a determining factor in the end. Visual Studio Code is one of the most extensible editors out there. Integrations and extensions are at the heart of the VS Code editor. Top picks include the Python Extension, Remote Development Extension, and many other IntelliSense driven extensions. VS Code also has some cool ones including code formatting via Prettier, theming via icons and code editor themes. Just about every single item / feature that VS Code offers is fully extensible and there probably many of extension out there that can empower your process. For example, JetBrains powerful built-in integrations with docker. By only specifying a configuration type such as a Dockerfile, all JetBrains IDEs give complete control of all arguments, names, tags, ports, environment variables in an easy-to-use configuration GUI. When run, the IDE integrates with docker integration to bring you the build log, the run log, environment variables, and easy-to-read and integrated configuration settings: JetBrains IDEs also have a rich plugin ecosystem. For example, I was able to install a plugin that offered full language support for Verilog and another that gave full support for Matlab. Ironically these lightweight JetBrains plugins gave a better coding experience than the native Matlab or Quartus (Verilog) environments. Indubitably, both have an extensive community and marketplace to be able to get a variety of stable and custom built extensions/plugins. Any feature that each respective IDE might not be able to handle, you will most likely be able to add it to their core functionality. However, with a slightly larger community base on VS Code (and the support of Microsoft), having more extensions and the life-changing Remote-Containers extension (for me, at least) allowed me to iterate so much faster. Here, if you are working with very custom code that might require custom extensions like Docker, VS Code is definitely the IDE for you. Though VS Code itself does not have live sharing built in. Microsoft has created a live share extension that allows almost instant live sharing. What makes this so great is that all anyone needs is VS Code, in fact now you can even live share directly from your browser using vscode.dev. The actual live share process itself is really good…as long as you have a good internet connection. Users can follow each other and edit code alongside each other. VS Code also keeps track of who helped author the commit for source control. With all of this in mind, and how simple live share is to set up. VS Code arguably outshines almost any other IDE and editor in this space. All JetBrains IDEs offer a huge number of options to share your code with others and collaborate live. These options vary by the degree of security they offer. An impressive ability I recently discovered was running any JetBrains IDE inside a docker container using projector. This allows me to connect to a JetBrains IDE hosted on a server such as the cloud and then code with full JetBrains features inside my web browser. Now with just a password I can securely code anywhere from a headless server. This is just one of the many sharing options. If it was two years ago, I would’ve deemed this feature pretty irrelevant. In fact, before two years ago, I never even know collaboration features existed in IDEs. We could’ve simply walked over to our colleague(s) and started working together on the same machine. But now, with COVID still going strong, it has become much harder to be able to have this luxury. Because of this, both of these IDEs do a very solid job, enabling such functionality. However, the sole reason that the undo function i synced across users instantly make me recommend JetBrains a hundred times over VS Code. And, the video and audio call support alongside the ability to record Git blame across users is just the frosting on top. Now, beyond these factors here, I also know that VS Code is a free IDE while JetBrains comes with a decently hefty price tag which I understand might turn some of you away (it is free for students though). However, for me, its been a blast joining a part of the JetBrains ecosystem for this past month and I cannot wait to continue working with it more. I hope you might consider giving it a shot, even when there is a bit of a price to entry. About plugins. I worked on plugins for both platforms and they each have their pain points. But in the end I have to say IntelliJ is still way ahead. I can literally inject functionality directly into the editor window and insert inlays within the code. It’s a very deep integration with clear migration paths. The level of support we have on the slack channel for plugin developers is amazing.
